Welcome to Amarillo! The Yellow Rose of Texas (Amarillo is Spanish for Yellow)
Amarillo is Located on the high plains in the panhandle of Texas between New Mexico and the panhandle of Oklahoma. It gets its name from all the yellow wildflowers that bloom in the spring around Amarillo Lake and the yellow soil along Amarillo Creek.
The downtown area has seen some revitalization in recent years and has several block parties throughout the spring & summer as well as major art projects thanks to Center City. Amarillo also has over 50 public parks.
To the northeast of Amarillo is the Canadian River that forms the Lake Meredith National Recreational Area it offers a multitude of water sports.
To the south, there is the breathtaking Palo Duro Canyon State Park second only to the Grand Canyon in size. It offers stunning views such as the Lighthouse Pinnacle. The park system offers such things as cabin rentals and horseback riding through the canyon. The best time for photo opportunities would of course be at sunrise and sunset.
